KRIOL AWARENESS COURSE COMING UP!

Our Kriol Awareness Course is coming up soon! You can learn a bit about Kriol language and culture from the Ngukurr area. If you work anywhere where you can hear people talking Kriol, this course is perfect for you. Your teachers will be expert Kriol speakers from Ngukurr, with some linguist experts too! WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

• Practical exercises to improve comprehension and beginning speaking Kriol,
• The sound system of Kriol,
• The writing system of Kriol: this enables you to accurately sound out Kriol words you read and helps in writing down new words you learn from Kriol speakers,
• Introduction to beginner’s vocabulary in Kriol and tips on how to continue to build on it after the course
• Family, skin & kinship – central to showing courtesy and respect in Kriol,
• Grammatical aspects of Kriol,
• Historical background of Kriol,
• Tips for cross-cultural communication and examples of how miscommunication can occur.

The course is an aid to anyone wanting to understand and more effectively communicate with Kriol native speakers, such as to develop friendships, to have more meaningful consultations, or to teach more effectively. It also helps with understanding the centrality of relationships in all activities in the Kriol speaking community. The course is an introductory course only, so participants should not expect to become competent in speaking and understanding Kriol (this takes a long time!), but participants will gain building blocks from which they can further develop Kriol language skills. 

COVID-19 Restrcitions

To ensure COVID-19 remains out of remote communities, each attendee must follow the following restrictions:

• The attendee is fully vaccinated against COVID-19
• The attendee will NOT have been in a COVID-19 hotspot within two weeks prior to the course.
• The attendee will NOT attend the course if they are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 (e.g. fever, sore throat, runny nose, headache, fatigue).
• The attendee understands they are required to obtain a permit from the Northern Land Council to travel to Ngukurr

CANCELLATION POLICY

Tickets are non-refundable. Ngukurr Language Centre reserves the right to cancel the course. Cancellation by Ngukurr Language Centre will result in reimbursement for the percentage of the course not run.’

OTHER INFORMATION

Permit: Ngukurr is on Aboriginal land. You will need to apply for a visitor’s permit if you are coming in from out of town. It is free to apply for a permit. Please visit https://www.nlc.org.au/apply-for-permit to apply.

Transport: If coming from out of community, course participants will be required to find their own transport to and from Ngukurr. A section of the Roper Highway is unsealed, and road conditions can vary significantly depending on the time of year. It is your responsibility to check the road conditions before you leave. 

Food: We will provide morning tea and afternoon tea, but you will need to bring your own lunch. There is a shop in town with a little takeaway if you don’t want to make your own.

Dress: Visitors to Ngukurr are required to dress modestly. Clothing should not be tight fitting and dresses/skirts should be below the knee.
